10. IU at the Seiberling

Foyer during the early 1970's renovation

In 1946, the mansion and its carriage house were purchased from the George Kingston estate by Indiana University for use as the IU Center in Kokomo. The first classes were held in the Seiberling that fall, with about 400 students enrolled. The basement of the mansion was used as a student recreation center and the rooms were used (and some were modified) for classes.  Eventually, the Elliott House and its carriage house were added to the campus. IU used the properties until 1965, when the new campus on S. Washington was finished.

The stains on the floor near the front staircase show where Indiana University Kokomo placed a water fountain.  The unstained boards are replacements for the damaged area. In the photo above, taken in 1972 during the initial renovation efforts, you can see the fountain (partially hidden behind the sign).
